In Trump’s America, the Conversation Turns Ugly and Angry, Starting at the Top

Image
WASHINGTON — President Trump has railed against undocumented immigrants in recent days, branding many of them “ murderers and thieves ” who want to “ infest our country .” Not long ago, he referred to them as “ animals ,” although he insisted he meant only those who join a violent gang. The president’s unpresidential language has become the standard for some on his team. This week his former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, made a mocking noise, “ womp womp ,” when a liberal strategist raised the case of a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome separated from her parents at the border. Mr. Trump’s coarse discourse increasingly seems to inspire opponents to respond with vituperative words of their own. Whether it be Robert De Niro’s  four-letter condemnation  at the Tony Awards or a congressional intern who  shouted the same word  at Mr. Trump when he visited the Capitol this week, the president has generated so much anger among his foes that some are crossi...

You are your life, and nothing else

Existentialist philosophers teach us that we alone are responsible for creating a meaningful life in an absurd and unfair world. Standing on a cliff, a sense of disorientation and confusion cloud you. Not only are you afraid of falling, you also fear succumbing to the impulse of throwing yourself off. Nothing is holding you back. Dread, anxiety and anguish rise to the surface. Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard describes this as a case of “existential angst” because here, at the cliff face, you are experiencing your own freedom first-hand. You can do whatever you please – move forward into the yawning abyss or remain where you are. It’s up to you. The realisation that you have absolute freedom to decide the course of your life – jump or don’t jump – is as dizzying as vertigo, explains Kierkegaard, who suggests that we face the same anxiety in all of life’s choices. Every action we take is a choice, decided upon by us and no one else. Kierkegaard’s argument that life is a se...

Pope Francis, world leaders disparage Trump's policy on prohibited immigrants

Image
Pope Francis and British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday led global condemnation against the Trump administration's controversial policy of separating children from migrant parents at America's border with Mexico. Pictures of dozens of children sleeping in cages and audio of children crying for their parents have emerged in recent days, triggering widespread criticism. It comes after a 'zero-tolerance' crackdown on illegal immigration was brought in by United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Reacting to the Trump administration's 'zero tolerance' policy, Pope Francis said he supported US Catholic bishops who said it was 'immoral' and 'contrary to our Catholic values'. "I am on the side of the bishops' conference," Francis said. Prime Minister May said holding children 'in what appear to be cages [is] deeply disturbing' and 'wrong'. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the US ...

Afghanistan: Taliban resume fighting as Eid ceasefire ends

Image
On the final day of a three-day  Eid al-Fitr  ceasefire, the Taliban said they would resume fighting, despite President Ashraf Ghani's announcement that the government was extending its own ceasefire with the group by 10 days. In the statement on Sunday, the Taliban repeated their preconditions for peace talks, including that they would only negotiate directly with the US and that foreign forces should leave Afghanistan. "Our fighters  will now resume their operations across the country against the foreign invaders and their internal puppets,"  Taliban spokesman  Zabihullah Mujahid told Al Jazeera. In an unexpected move, Ghani on  June 5 announced  an unconditional ceasefire with the Taliban until  June 20 , coinciding with the end of Ramadan. On June 9, the  Taliban announced  that their fighters would stop attacking Afghan security forces for the three days of Eid  for the first time in the nearly 17-year confli...

Melania Trump, In Rare Plea, Calls For End To Migrant Family Separations

Washington: Democratic lawmakers vowed Sunday to end the "evil" separation of migrant children from their parents at the US border, as First Lady Melania Trump made a rare political plea to end the deeply controversial practice. The "zero-tolerance" border security policy implemented by President Donald Trump's administration has sparked outrage on both sides of the political aisle and took on particular resonance as America celebrated Father's Day. Trump has said he wants the separations to end but continues to blame opposition Democrats for the crisis, which critics say is one of his own makings. "The Democrats should get together with their Republican counterparts and work something out on Border Security & Safety. Don't wait until after the election because you are going to lose!" he tweeted. His wife, who seldom wades into the political arena, opted to call for bipartisan immigration reform to fix the issue, rather than denounce the...

How I Met The Love of My Life....

Before I begin, I want to say a huge thank you to Rhonda for revealing The Secret. It has managed to get me the one thing I have always wanted but never had until recently, love. I promised myself that I’d publish my story here the day I realised I had found what I was looking for all these years, so here I am. I found my boyfriend, in whom I also found the best friend I had always craved. For most of my life, I had always felt like everyone’s after thought, a shadow of that close friend, of that family member. I was selling myself short and had resigned to the fact that I would always be the one who gets outshone by others. The more I told myself this, the more I received exactly that feeling, the feeling of not being enough. All of that changed when I truly understood the law of attraction. I changed my thought process. I began to tell myself that I was the outshiner, that I turn heads when I walk down the street or into a room. I repeated the mantra ‘I am more than enough’...
