41 days to go: The worst goal to score

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 41 days to go! Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.
41The number of own goals scored in the history of the FIFA World Cup™, with arguably the most famous coming when Marcelo put through his own net to give Croatia the lead in the Opening Match of Brazil 2014.
The Real Madrid player’s unfortunate error came in the 11th minute, when he tried to clear an Ivica Olic cross from the left but only succeeded in diverting the ball into the Brazil net. With Neymar in inspired form, however, the hosts came back to win 3-1.
Other memorable world finals own goals include the one Andres Escobar scored to give USA a 2-1 win over Colombia in 1994, and Italy defender Cristian Zaccardo’s fluffed clearance against the Americans at Germany 2006, the only goal the Italians conceded in the competition prior to Zinedine Zidane’s penalty in the Final.
The first own goal in World Cup history was scored by Mexico’s Manuel Rosas in a match against Chile in 1930, while the last one to date was attributed to Nigeria’s Joseph Yobo in their Round of 16 tie against France at Brazil 2014.
